National University ended a long stretch of futility against Ateneo after scoring a 78-74 win in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday night, Nov. 2, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Jolo Manansala finished with a double-double performance of 17 points apart from 11 rebounds as NU reclaimed the second spot with a 6-3 card.
The Bulldogs relied on a huge 27-9 second-quarter finish to keep themselves afloat against the Blue Eagles’ big response in the third.
With 46.7 left in the contest, BJ Andrade raced to the basket off a steal for a layup to even the game for the eighth time at 72-all.
However, Manansala reclaimed the lead for NU before Kean Baclaan, Mike Malonzo and Patrick Yu were consecutively sent to the line and iced the game.
It was the first time since Season 79 in Sept. 2016 that the Bulldogs came out on top of the Blue Eagles, ending their six-year, 10-game drought over the latter.
“At last, napunta rin sa amin ‘yong swerte. Kumbaga, for the past few games, although we work hard ‘yon lang napupunta doon sa kabila lagi. Still, happy ako dahil nag-live up sa challenge na naman tong mga batang to,” said NU head coach Jeff Napa.
Ateneo, for its part, had Andrade who finished with 21 points while Kai Ballungay and Dave Ildefonso added 15 and 14 markers, respectively. With the defeat, the Blue Eagles fell back to the third spot with a 5-3 card.
