Marina disputes reports on Pinoy seafarers losing jobs over poor compliance on maritime standards

The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) has disputed reports that the Filipino seafarers on European Union (EU) ships are in danger of losing their jobs over poor compliance with international maritime standards.

In a statement, Marina said it has already submitted its report to the European Commission(EC) in March this year that contains response and strategic action plan to address grievances on the implementation of the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW).

"It was the result of close collaboration among government agencies and maritime industry stakeholders representing maritime education and training, ship management and manning, and seafarers," the statement read.

The Committee on Safe Seas and the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (COSS) is the EC body responsible in deciding the status of the country's compliance with the Convention.

Marina said a decision is unlikely to be released in 2022.
