Teachers who test positive for Covid-19 may avail of 'excused absence' --- DepED
Without sick leave, the Department of Education (DepED) said that teachers who tested positive for Covid-19, who are close contacts as well as those with symptoms may avail of excused absences.

“Kapag ang teacher ay nag-positive, may symptoms or close contact na kailangan mag-isolate, sila ay makakapag-avail ng ‘excused absence’ --- they are absent but will be paid their salaries (When the teacher tests positive, has symptoms or a close contact that needs to be isolated, they can avail of an 'excused absence' --- they are absent but will be paid their salaries),” said DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa.
Citing DepEd Order No. 39 series of 2022 or the Health and Safety Protocols in light of the Covid-19 Pandemic, Poa explained that teachers may avail of “excused absence” instead of sick leave.
This, he added, is pursuant to the Memorandum Circular No. 2 series of 2022 issued by the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
“Teachers, as civil servants, are under the CSC so as per their rules as to excused absences and alike, sumusunod tayo sa CSC dahil sila ang may mandato sila diyan (we follow the CSC because they have the mandate there),” he explained.
Under the CSC memorandum circular, Poa said that “as long as you are a close contact or you have symptoms of Covid, it is excused absence because you are sick and obviously, that excused absence will be paid.”
The DO No. 39 s. of 2022, Poa explained, outlined the latest guidelines in the implementation of face-to-face classes in schools. It also contained provisions that tackled the Covid cases as regards teachers at their absences.
“Since teachers are also civil servants, they are bound to abide by the guidelines issued by the CSC,” Poa said.
Meanwhile, Poa reiterated DepED’s appreciation to teachers for their important role in molding the country’s youth as contributors to nation-building.

DepED led the celebration of the 2022 World Teachers’ Day (WTD) and National Teachers’ Day (NTD) as the culminating activity for National Teachers’ Month (NTM) from Sept. 5 to Oct. 5.
While the WTD/NTD is celebrated only once a year, Poa assured that DepEd continues to monitor the welfare of teachers. “Hindi lang isang araw sa isang taon ang appreciation natin sa kanila (Our appreciation for them is not just one day a year),” he added.
