2 DPWH-built Muntinlupa and Las Piñas bridges ease public's traffic woes

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed two bridge projects that are seen to provide safe and convenient travel in the cities of Muntinlupa and Las Piñas.
DPWH Las Piñas-Muntinlupa District Engineering Office chief Isabelo Baleros said the construction of the P40 million worth permanent bridge along Marcos Alvarez Road in Las Piñas City will reduce the traffic snarl in the area by as much as 50 percent.
With the replacement of the weak bridge, Baleros noted that the travel time of motorists going to Bacoor City in Cavite from Las Piñas City and vice versa had decreased by over 10 minutes.
The project involves the replacement of the existing box culvert and a bridge consisting of bored piles at both ends as sub-structures and grider as super-structure.
On the other hand, Baleros stated that the P50 million widening of the permanent bridges in the Sucat Interchange along the Sucat Parañaque-Sucat Road in Muntinlupa City had cut down travel time for motorists traversing the city going to Las Piñas City by at least 15 minutes.
He explained that work on the permanent bridges involved the expansion of the west bound portion of the two-lane structure by another two additional lanes where two bored piles at both ends and at the median of the sub-structure were placed and a steel girder at the superstructure was installed.
Despite the completion of the high-impact projects, Baleros admitted that his office was still bombarded with complaints due to the public’s inconvenience for other infrastructure projects not implemented by the DPWH.
He appealed to the public for their patience and understanding in dealing with the temporary inconvenience as these “road projects are being made for the benefit of the people in the long run.’’
However, Baleros pointed out that his office was wrongly accused for supposedly excavating newly-paved roadways that are actually the projects of other government infrastructure agencies.
He specifically pointed to the Alabang-Zapote Road and Daang Maharlika in Muntinlupa City and the Quirino Avenue and Alabang Zapote Road portion in Piñas City where pipe-laying projects are being done by the Maynilad Water Service Inc. which is the water and wastewater services provider for the 17 cities and municipalities that comprise the west zone.
“It was perceived by the public that all road works are all DPWH projects,’’ Baleros maintained.
The DPWH district engineer had no option but to advise ‘Maynilad and other utilities (utility services)’ to install prominently advisories/signages in strategic locations to identify their projects and inform the public that these are not DPWH undertakings.
Baleros noted that the DPWH are repeatedly questioned by critics why newly-paved roads are suddenly excavated saying that they have been at the wrong end of “baseless and unfair corrupt accusations.’ (Chito A. Chavez)
