Zero volcanic quakes in Mayon in past 24 hours but Alert Level 2 stays – Phivolcs

The Mayon Volcano network did not detect any volcanic earthquake in the past 24-hour period, but the volcano is still in a status of “increased unrest,” said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Saturday morning, Oct. 8.

Phivolcs, in its volcano bulletin issued at 8 a.m., said a moderate emission of white steam-leaden plume was still observed in Mayon. Apart from this, Mayon’s sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission persisted and was last measured at an average of 391 tonnes on Oct. 1.

With these developments, the Alert Level 2 status, also regarded as “increased unrest,” still prevails over Mayon.

“The public is reminded that there is current unrest driven by shallow magmatic processes that could eventually lead to phreatic eruptions or even precede hazardous magmatic eruption,” warned Phivolcs.

Entry into the six-kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited.

Phivolcs, on Friday, Oct. 7, raised Mayon’s alert level status from 1 to 2 following an increase in the volcano’s activities.
