Marcos to Phivolcs: Prepare, be alert amid Mayon's unrest

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. directed concerned agencies to ensure preparedness after the alert level status of Mayon Volcano rose to Level 2.

Marcos said this in a tweet on Friday evening, October 7.

In his post, he wrote that he was already coordinating with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in monitoring the situation.

He asked the public to remain vigilant and local government units prepared amid the active volcano's unrest.

PHIVOLCS has placed the volcano in Albay province under Alert Level 2 due to its "current unrest driven by shallow magmatic processes."

The agency said these processes could lead to phreatic eruptions or even precede hazardous magmatic eruptions.

Under Alert Level 2, the public is discouraged from entering the so-called six-kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone to minimize the risks from explosions, rockfall, and landslides.

Pilots are likewise advised against flying close to the volcano's summit as ash from any eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

PHIVOLCS placed Mayon Volcano under Alert Level 1 in August after it exhibited "low-level unrest."
