BFAR promotes tilapia, ulang polyculture to benefit fish farmers in Cagayan Valley

AMBAGUIO, Nueva Vizcaya – The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) held a harvest field day here on Sept. 28 month to show the success of its tilapia and ulang polyculture project.

The agency, through the Fisheries Production and Support Services Division and its production farms, has been promoting the polyculture of tilapia and ulang to maximize production areas and increase income of fish farmers in the region.

A technology demonstration project for the polyculture of tilapia and ulang was established in the mountainous Barangay Labang here.

The area was identified as a suitable polyculture site because of the presence of spring and free-flowing water from the mountain.

Nestor B. Dupingay, project co-operator, bared his farming experience from inception to operation.

A 600-square meter pond was stocked with 3,000 ulang post-larvae and tilapia fingerlings with a ratio of 40 percent ulang and 60 percent tilapia.

Dupingay made a partial harvest and gathered 366 kilograms – 41 kilograms of ulang and 325 kilograms of tilapia – which gave him a return of investment of 88.20 percent.

Harvest was sold to the nearby community.

Dupngay thanked BFAR through the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Fishery Office for his bountiful yield.
