ILOILO CITY – An inmate stabbed his tormentor to death at the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) in Pototan, Iloilo on Friday, Oct. 7.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-6 identified the victim as Melvin Gemio, 39.
Atty. Anthony Dogelio, BJMP-6 spokesperson, said that the suspect, Elbert Ganancial, 34, suddenly stabbed the victim with an improvised bladed weapon at the male dormitory at around 6:30 a.m.
Dogelio said the suspect immediately surrendered to jail guards after the incident while Gemio was taken to the nearby Iloilo Provincial Hospital where he died.
Initial investigation said the suspect can no longer take Genancial’s bullying before the incident.
Genancial was convicted of murder while Gemio is in for illegal possession of firearms.
This is the latest major incident that rocked the IDJ.
On Aug. 24, more than 100 inmates climbed to the roof to hold a noise barrage to complain about inadequate food.
