A group of education workers urged President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr to “uplift the condition” of teachers as he marks his 100th day in office.

“It is high-time for the government to once and for address the problems of our teachers and of education,” the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) said.

The group urged Marcos, who will mark his first 100 days in Malacañang on Friday, Oct. 7, to fulfill his promises during his presidential campaign which include pushing for pursuing programs and reforms designed to “uplift” the quality of life of teachers.

To help uplift the conditions of teachers, ACT urged Marcos to upgrade their salaries: Salary Grade 15 for Teacher I; SG 16 for Instructor I; P30,000 minimum salaries for private school teachers; and livable national minimum wage for SG I employees and non-teaching personnel in private schools.

Marcos was also urged to ease teachers’ workload and implement four hours a day teaching time as well as additional compensation for teachers’ work outside of regular duties and work schedules.

ACT also PBBM to junk the 15 days per year limit in granting service credits for teachers.

Teachers, the group said, should be provided with laptops; a P1,500 internet allowance per month, and a P10,000 cash allowance for every teacher per year.

Marcos was also urged to implement an “evidence-based” education recovery plan and overhaul the K-to-12 program which added two years to the country’s basic education cycle.

Moreover, the current administration was also urged to double the education budget which is equivalent to six percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

With Philippine schools set to implement 100 percent face-to-face classes this school year, the group also demanded the Marcos government to fund safe school reopening to ensure not only the health and safety of learners but of the teachers as well.

“We will not be able to propel education recovery without resolving the teachers’ problems on overwork, low salaries and lack of government support,” ACT said.

ACT reminded the Marcos administration that the country would not be able to negate the impacts of the pandemic on education if the government does not implement “bold and game-changing” measures that can alter the course of our declining educational system.

“Our education system is in the throes of crisis the government must take care of our teachers who breaths life to it,” the group said. “As such, uplifting the conditions of our teachers is central to education recovery,” ACT added.
