By Nel Andrade
Work and classes are suspended today in Cardona, Rizal as the local government declared Oct. 7 as a special non-working holiday in the municipality in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the parish, the feast day of the Nuestra Senora del Santisimo Rosario de Cardona-La Virgen de Sapao (Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Cardona), and the pontifical coronation of the Marian image.
Mayor Bernardo San Juan, Jr., issued Executive Order No. S-36 declaring Oct. 7 as a special non-working holiday in the entire municipality.
San Juan said thousands of pilgrims from different parts of the country are expected to come, celebrate and participate in the major religious procession and civic events today.
Mayor San Juan said work in government offices in the town is suspended unless they belong to the department responsible for the maintenance of peace and order, traffic enforcement, disaster and risk reduction management, health and sanitation and other similar services.
Employers in the private sector, “in the exercise of management prerogative and in coordination with their respective safety, health committee or safety officer or any other responsible company officers, may suspend work to ensure the safety and convenience of their employees and customer.”
A Holy Mass at 9 a.m. at the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary will be presided by Manila Archbishop Jose Fuerte Cardinal Advincula where the canonical coronation of the image will happen during the mass.
Preparation for the historic event was done with the holding of nine-day novena masses at 6 p.m. and visit of the image in different parishes in nearby localities.
The Orchestra of the Cardona Youth played music instruments inside the diocesan shrine on the eve of the feast day.
Earlier this year, the Marian image clothed in gold with colorful embroidery, toured some churches in and outside the province, including the Manila Cathedral and Parish Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Paranaque City, as part of the preparation for the 150th anniversary of the shrine and image and its pontifical coronation.
Pope Francis granted a pontifical coronation for Cardona’s Marian image, also known as La Virgen de Sapao (The Virgin of Sapao), earlier this year as announced by shrine rector Fr. Bienvenido Guevarra.
The Marian image of Cardona is the fifth Marian image to be granted a pontifical coronation in the Diocese of Antipolo after Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje in Antipolo City, Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados de Marikina in Marikina City, Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu in San Mateo, Rizal, and, Nuestra Señora de la Luz in Cainta, Rizal.
