Celebrating 'dance from all angles' online and onstage

Here’s what to expect at this year’s Fifth Wall Fest

It is an understatement to say that live events were greatly challenged during the height of the pandemic. That’s why, in order to survive, thespians, music artists, and dancers explored the world of URL and found a stage online. Among the many events that rose during the pandemic is the Fifth Wall Fest, a local festival established in 2020 dedicated to dance films. As it returns for its third edition in our pandemic-new normal milieu, the festival is moving beyond the screens with its hybrid celebration.

Happening from Oct. 7 to 16, festival-goers can enjoy a wide array of local and foreign dance films in multiple locations and formats at the UP Fine Arts Gallery, Sine Pop, Tarzeer Pictures, and www.fifthwallfest.com. 

To kick off its 10-day festivities, Fifth Wall Fest 2022 will start with a screening of “Happy Days Are Here Again” (1974) by Cirio H. Santiago on Oct. 6 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater. Audiences will also be treated to live performances by Steps Dance Studio and the AMP Big Band. 

What festival-goers shouldn’t miss as well is the Black Box, Fifth Wall Fest’s very own space for engagement, interaction, and education. Transcending the traditional notion of a four-walled performance space, this platform opens dialogues for movement to all kinds of speakers, movers, and listeners—fostering interdisciplinary connections and a collective celebration of dance from all angles.

“The Fifth Wall Fest isn’t just a concept anymore. It is very much real and palpable,” Madge Reyes, founder and festival director, says. “With a mix of in-person and online activities this edition, we continue to challenge our audiences to explore what it means to celebrate dance from a variety of perspectives. It is what we were always meant to do.”

From discovering the life of a National Artist and the role of dance in Philippine cinema to international movies centering on the art of movement, below are the events happening at this year’s Fifth Wall Fest.
