Two rescued, one still missing, one dead in aftermath of Typhoon Paeng in Nueva Vizcaya


CAMP SATURNINO DUMLAO, Bayombong -- A father and his daughter survived, but the latter’s husband went missing as the trio tried to cross an overflow bridge in Brgy. Calitlitan in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya at the height Typhoon Paeng’s fury on Saturday night, Oct. 29.

The Nueva Vizcaya police were able to rescue Alfredo Julian, 62, and his daughter Laila Ramirez, 27, after they drowned while crossing a bridge already submerged in floodwater in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya.

The two who are residents of Purok 4, Balite, Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya, were rescued at around 7 a.m. on Sunday along the river.

Laila’s husband, Nico Ramirez, 26, was not as fortunate as he went missing.

Meanwhile, the rescuers were able to retrieve the body of Juanito Valera, 75, a market vendor and a resident of Brgy. Kirang, also in Aritao.

Valera was crossing a bridge going to his work when he was swept away by the strong current.

His body was recovered around 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30, in Brgy. Cutar, Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya.

Col. Dante A. Lubos, Officer In-Charge of Nueva Vizcaya Police Provincial Office, spearheaded the search, rescue and retrieval operation, together with the Aritao Police Station, Dupax del Sur Police Bambang Police and Bayombong Police.

The operation was in coordination with Robert Corpuz of Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Aritao, Philippine Army’s 5th Infantry Division, Philippine Red Cross, Kabalikat Rescuers, LGU rescuers and other civilian volunteers.
