Capiz resident dies after being swept by strong current in river amid TS Paeng’s wrath in W. Visayas


ILOILO CITY -- A 28-year-old man in Capiz province became the first casualty of Tropical Storm ‘Paeng’ in Western Visayas region.

The victim was identified as JP Buendia of Tapaz town.

“He was missing yesterday , but his body was discovered today ,” said Brigette Abordo, a Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (MDDRM Officer) of Tapaz town.

Abordo told Manila Bulletin in a phone interview that Buendia tried to cross the river between Carida and San Roque villages last Thursday. However, Buendia was swept by strong currents.

In Tapaz town alone, more than 2,400 individuals are affected by floods in 16 villages.

Based on the data of the Regional Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC-6), the province of Capiz has the most number of displaced persons with 52,138.

The RDRRMC-6 via the Office of Civil Defense (OCD-6) recorded more than 75,700 displaced persons all over Western Visayas region, which comprises of Aklan, Antique, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces.
