Jeepney and bus stops are soon to be set up along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City in a bid to implement discipline and order in one the busiest thoroughfares in the metropolis, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) disclosed on Thursday, Oct. 27.
MMDA acting Chairman Carlo Dimayuga III said the jeepney stop is also part of the safety measures amid the plan to designate an exclusive lane for motorcycles along Commonwealth Avenue.
"There should be designated bus and jeepney stops for passengers as part of road safety. It’s about time to instill road discipline among all passenger vehicles," said Dimayuga.
The Metro Manila Council (MMC), composed of mayors of Metro Manila, has already approved the designation of motorcycle and bike lanes in compliance with the recommendation during a summit participated by transport groups and other stakeholders.
The exclusive motorcycle lanes will be located at the third lane from the right along Commonwealth Avenue while the outermost right lane shall be designated as an exclusive bicycle lane.
“The exclusive motorcycle lanes located at the third lane from the right along Commonwealth will depend upon the road conditions as the road has some inconsistencies in terms of lane width due to different construction projects,” Dimayuga said, noting the ongoing construction of the MRT 7.
The second lane and third lane of the same avenue will be designated as exclusive Public Utility Vehicle (for jeeps, UV Express, buses) and motorcycle lanes, respectively. The remaining lanes of Commonwealth Avenue shall be utilized by all other motor vehicles.
Dimayuga said the setting up of jeepney and bus stops are expected to instill discipline for both the commuters and public utility drivers.
“Through this, we could strategize on how the PUVs could maneuver to their designated stops. We would like to confine pedestrians to designated loading and unloading areas,” Dimayuga said.
