REFLECTIONS TODAY
In the Gospel of Luke, Jerusalem plays an important role. It was in Jerusalem where Jesus was killed (23:33ff), and where he rose from the dead (24:1-12). It was in Jerusalem where he commissioned his disciples (24:36ff). Today’s Gospel has two parts. The first part narrates how Herod wants to kill Jesus. However, Jesus is determined to continue accomplishing his mission in Jerusalem. Nothing could stop him from carrying out his mission, not even the threat over his life. The second part tells of Jesus’ lament over Jerusalem (cf also 19:41-44). Jesus is willing to offer his life primarily for the sake of the people of Jerusalem. Luke uses the imagery of a mother hen gathering her brood under her wings to describe Jesus’ care for the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Yet many refuse to accept Jesus. They fail to recognize the time of their visitation.
Do we have a good sense of mission like Jesus? Are we determined to carry out our Christian mission every day? Do we continue to proclaim the Gospel even when people tend not to listen?
Gospel • Luke 13:31-35
Some Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you.” He replied, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my purpose. Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.’
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned. But I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
