China a 'dependable partner' in PH infrastructure program — Marcos

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Thursday, Oct. 27, hailed China for being the Philippines' “dependable partner” in the country’s infrastructure program, its concessional loans and grants.

The Chief Executive expressed his gratitude to China, who was represented by Chinese Ambassador to Manila Huang Xilian during the groundbreaking ceremony of Samal Island-Davao City Connector Project, and said he was looking forward to further strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

“It is for us to express also our gratitude to the government of the People’s China as they were an active member and have always been a dependable partner in this infrastructure development program,” Marcos said during the event held in Davao City.

“This is not the only project that we have depended upon a concessional loans and even grants from the government of the People’s Republic of China and it is clear to see the benefits that those projects bring to our people, to our economy and to the Philippines,” he added.

Marcos, who was joined by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, lauded the construction of the Samal Island-Davao City Connector bridge because it will “help us develop the economic potential of Davao City and the island garden of the City of Samal as well has enhanced its resident’s access to employment, education and other services.”

Huang, for his part, said that China is ready to work with the Philippines in building consensus among the leaders and strengthening ties.

“In China's journey towards China's modernization, we are willing to work hand in hand with the Philippines for mutual benefits and common developments,” he assured.

The bridge could accommodate 25,000 vehicles daily and reduce travel time between Samal and Davao, Marcos pointed out, as he underscored how the bridge will ensure smoother mobility of people and improve the tourism and recuperation of the economy in a post-pandemic Philippines.

“Let this bridge affirm this administration’s commitment and resolve to become a sturdy and purposeful link that bridges gap between physical and geographical barriers but also the various social structures that need to be connected and fortified as one,” Marcos said.
