667 aftershocks recorded so far after magnitude 6.4 Abra earthquake
The number of aftershocks following the “very strong” magnitude 6.4 Abra earthquake has climbed to 667, state seismologists disclosed on Thursday, Oct. 27.
In its latest count as of 4 p.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said they have already recorded 667 aftershocks after the magnitude 6.4 quake that shook the provinces of northern Luzon on Tuesday evening, Oct. 25.

Of the recorded quakes, 135 were plotted while 12 were felt. A plotted earthquake, according to Phivolcs, was located by three or more stations. A recorded quake, on the other hand, was detected by at least one station.
The quake’s epicenter was traced 5 kilometers northeast of Lagayan, Abra at a depth of 16 kilometers. Largest reported intensity was at Phivilocs Earthquake Intensity Scale VII or “destructive.”
“The seismicity in Abra and vicinity can be attributed to the presence of several active faults in the region such as the Abra River Fault, West Ilocos Fault System, Bangui Fault, Naglibacan Fault, Manmanoc Fault, as well as the offshore presence of the Manila Trench, west of the province,” said Phivolcs in its earthquake primer issued on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
