PNP: Nationwide index crimes down by almost 12% in September
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has recorded an almost 12 percent decrease in index crimes across the country for the month of September this year.
From 3,056 index crimes reported in August this year, PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr. said it went down to 2,690 or a decrease of 366 incidents.
Index crimes refer to serious crimes that include homicide, murder, rape, physical injury which are classified as crimes against person; and, robbery, theft, carnappping of vehicles and stealing of motorcycles, which are classified as crimes against property.
Azurin said the decrease in index crimes is highest in Mindanao with 28.47 percent decrease followed by the Visayas with 10.24 percent decrease. Luzon recorded a 5.96 percent decline in index crimes.
Based on the PNP data, homicide, rape and murder posted the biggest decrease at 26.09 percent, 25.99 percent and 20.67 percent, respectively.
Physical Injury also posted a similar double-digit decline at 15 percent. Single-digit declines were posted for theft, robbery and carnapping of motorcycles.
Carnapping of vehicles, however, went up by 5.88 percent.
"We remain optimistic that this downward trend of crime will prevail until the Holiday Season in December onwards to the New Year when maximum deployment of police and security personnel is expected in anticipation of increased public activities," said Azurin.
