Iloilo 1st district Rep. Janette Garin wants Filipinos to give the likes of incoming Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Camilo Cascolan a chance to prove their worth.
Garin had this to say during an ANC Headstart interview Tuesday, Oct. 25 wherein she was asked about the recent appointment of Cascolan, a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, to the DOH.
"I am hoping that General Cascolan, if ever he will be given that task, can deliver," said Garin, who is herself a former DOH secretary.
"Nagkaroon na kasi agad ng connotation na inappoint yan kasi political appointee (There was this immediate connotation that he was a political appointee) but these can also be people who are applying ," she said.
"I am not talking about General Cascolan alone, I'm talking about other people na inappoint sa gobyerno pinupuno na agad ng criticisms (who were appointed in government and quickly swamped with criticisms). Why don’t we give those people a chance to serve?" Garin noted.
"Observe them, lets say 100 days year, if they are not performing they can be changed anytime," she pointed out.

Garin further said of Cascolan's alleged status as a political appointee of the current Marcos administration: "If I am looking at the Department of Health, most of those appointed are not political appointees."
"I am not sure if Gen Cascolan is a political appointee because I have not seen him very active in the political world and he’s not also a politician. I will look at it at the other perspective that he has been appointed because of his management skills, hindi kasi madali maghanap ng manager (because it's not easy to find a manager)," she said.
