
A 5.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Davao del Sur on Monday morning, Oct. 24, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs said the quake struck 16 kilometers (km) southwest of Davao City, Davao del Sur at 10:06 a.m.
It said the earthquake was felt at Intensity III (weak) in Malungon, Sarangani, and Intensity II (slightly felt) in Don Marcelino and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.
Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the tremor at Intensity II in Don Marcelino and Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental and Santo Niño, South Cotabato; and Intensity I in Alabel and Malapatan in Sarangani, Tupi and General Santos City in South Cotabato, and Kidapawan City in Cotabato.
The earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Phivolcs advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
