PAGASA: TD Obet now moving away from Batanes; LPA forms east of Mindanao
Tropical depression Obet, the country’s 15th tropical cyclone in 2022, is now moving away from Batanes, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Saturday, Oct. 22.

The weather disturbance’s center was last spotted 135 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes. It has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 55 kph.
“Obet is unlikely to bring heavy rainfall over any portion of the country,” said the state weather bureau. However, strong winds may still persist in areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1: Batanes and Babuyan Islands.
“Obet is forecast to exit the Philippine area of responsibility today,” PAGASA added.
LPA east of Mindanao
Aside from Obet, PAGASA is also monitoring a new low pressure area (LPA) 1,560 km east of Mindanao. It is less likely to develop into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours, but PAGASA Weather Specialist Benison Estareja said this LPA may enter PAR over the weekend.
The combined effects of intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and the LPA is forecast to bring rains in most parts of Visayas and Mindanao.
“Habang lumalapit sa bansa itong LPA ay mangangalap ito ng maraming moisture at pupunta sa mainit na parte ng karagatan kaya hindi rin natin inaalis ‘yung tiyansa na maging bagyo agad ito early next week (While nearing the Philippine landmass, this LPA will gather a lot of moisture and will go to the warm part of the sea. This is why we are not eliminating the possibility of it developing into a tropical cyclone early next week),” Estareja furthered.
