BJMP vows to advance PDL's progressive initiatives

Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Director Allan Iral vowed on Saturday, Oct. 22, to further strengthen the welfare and development programs of the bureau’s persons deprived of liberty (PDL) in preparation for their reintegration in the mainstream societies.

“Tuloy tuloy at mas lalo pa nating palalawakin ang mga welfare and development programs para sa ating mga PDL (The welfare and development programs of our PDLs will continue and will be enhanced),’’ Iral said.

Iral made the assurance during his visit at the General Santos City Jail-Male Dormitory where he represented Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin “Benhur’’ Abalos Jr. in an event to congratulate the four PDL chess players who bagged the recently concluded 2nd Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners on Oct. 17.

He lauded four PDLs and their coach, Jail Officer 1 Cedrix Cabangal for representing the country in the international chess tournament and for winning the biggest chess event among correctional facilities in the world where over 85 teams from 46 countries participated this year.

“The DILG and the whole BJMP family are very proud of your recent feat. Thank you for bringing pride and honor not only to the Jail Bureau but to the country as well,” Iral said.

“Tunay nga na pang world-class ang galing ng ating mga PDL (The talent of our PDLs is really world-class),’’ he added.

The historic win of PDL put the country on the global map of chess, particularly among the players in places of detention.

The DILG and the BJMP rewarded them with 20 chessboards, 10 chess clocks and cash incentives to expand their chess activities with other detainees in the facility in a bid to further boost the morale of the champion PDLs.

“Sports and recreational activities are integral components of the BJMP’s welfare and development programs which aims to promote camaraderie among PDL, encourage the development of self-confidence, and form positive entertainment,’’ Iral stated. (Chito A. Chavez)
