2 cops arrested for using motorcycle, van seized in police operations

Two policemen landed in jail and are now facing dismissal from the service after they were caught driving motor vehicles that were seized and in separate police operations.

On Oct. 20, Patrolman Marvin Salim was collared by the agents of the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP-IMEG) after he was caught driving a motorcycle that is supposed to be part of the evidence in a case filed by the Obando Municipal Police Station.

The motorcycle, according to IMEG director Police Brig. Gen. Warren de Leon, was confiscated in a police operation in 2020.

"He has been monitored after being reported to be using a recovered motorcycle, which was declared as evidence and described as a Yamaha Sniper. He had been regularly using it if it was his own," said de Leon.

Salim, assigned as an intelligence officer of the Obando Municipal Police Station, was arrested in front of a convenience store in Barangay Pagasa in Obando town.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested Patrolman Anthony Lacandazo after he was caught in the act of driving a van which was seized in a police operation against suspects of a robbery case in July this year in Muntinlupa City.

CIDG director Police Brig. Gen. Ronald Lee said they carried out the operation after confirming a tip that Lacandazo had been using the van.

Lacandazo, a member of the Highway Patrol Group of Police Regional Office 4A, even changed the license plate of the vehicle.

The suspect was arrested after he was flagged down by our operatives while driving a stolen vehicle," said Lee.

Among the items taken as evidence from the suspect were a mobile phone, a white Nissan Van 350 with the license plate NDV 9038, and Plate number NCU 8461 which was originally assigned to a Nissan Terra 2019 model.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has repeatedly warned its personnel of using vehicles that were confiscated in police operations over repeated reports that some erring cops are not including motorcycles and cars in the inventory of evidence seized in police operations.

Some erring cops are tempted to use the vehicles seized in police operations since some of them are just left abandoned in police impounding areas.

In some cases in the past, there were reports that motorcycle and other vehicle parts at the police impounding areas were being stolen.
