PH Internet speed improves – Ookla

The Philippines’ fixed broadband and mobile median download speeds showed improvements in Ookla’s September Speedtest Global Index rankings.

The country’s fixed broadband median speed increased to 78.69Mbps from 78.33Mbps registered the month before, while mobile median speed clocked in at 22.54Mbps from 22.35Mbps the month before.

The Philippines now ranks 46th out of 181 countries for fixed broadband and 85th out of 139 countries for mobile. Out of 50 Asian countries, the Philippines ranks 14th in fixed broadband and 29th in mobile. In the Asia Pacific, the country ranks 12th in fixed broadband and 17th in mobile out of 46 countries.

The continued improvement in the country’s internet speed is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s directive to provide fast and reliable internet connectivity especially in hard-to-reach localities in the country.

Recently, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy provided Internet connectivity in three far-flung island villages in Zamboanga City as part of its “BroadBand ng Masa (BBM)” program.

Uy was quoted as saying the Internet connectivity in the three island villages in Zamboanga City will open many more opportunities in areas such as online learning, telemedicine, and online banking.

In addition, Elon Musk’s satellite-based Starlink internet service is also expected to improve the country’s internet speeds further. The service is expected to be available by mid-2023, prioritizing connecting geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas of the country to the internet.

Starlink offers high speed low latency satellite internet service with download speed between 100Mbps to 200Mbps. Using advanced satellites in a low orbit, the service will enable video calls, online gaming, streaming and other high data activities that historically have not been possible with satellite internet.
