According to the US Embassy in Manila, they were the ones who fought side by side with the Americans during the bloodshed.

"The bravery of Filipino World War II veterans laid the foundation for our enduring alliance," she said, referring to the continuing friendship, partnership and alliance of the US and the Philippines.

The ceremony was held prior to the celebration of the Leyte Gulf Landing anniversary, where the US diplomat also attended on Thursday morning.

The Leyte Gulf Landings commemorative program remembers the arrival of Allied Forces led by United States General Douglas MacArthur to liberate the Philippines from the Japanese Imperial Forces that occupied the country from 1942-1945.

"To the veterans and family members who are present today, I extend to you on behalf of the US government our deep gratitude for your service. It is because of your sacrifices that we live in freedom," Carlson concluded in her Thursday's speech.
