Team Lakay is siding with ONE Bantamweight World Champion John “Hands of Stone” Lineker ahead of his first title defense against second-ranked contender Fabricio “Wonder Boy” Andrade.
The two Brazilians will meet in the main event of ONE Fight Night 3: Lineker vs. Andrade this Saturday morning, Oct. 22, from the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
When asked who they think will win, the warriors from Benguet made their prediction unanimously.
“This will be a five-round contest, so I think both fighters will be smart about their approach. I think in the first and second rounds, they will be gauging each other’s ability and trying to find their timing for that killer blow,” Stephen Loman, the fourth-ranked bantamweight, said.
“Between the third and fourth rounds, I believe one of them will down, and I’m leaning more on the idea that Andrade will be the one on the canvas.”
Like Loman, former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang and head coach Mark Sangiao expect “Hands of Stone” to overcome his feisty challenger in emphatic fashion.
While they believe that Andrade has the tools to pull off a shocker, they both agree that Lineker’s experience and durability will be the biggest factors in this clash.
“Lineker still has the advantage. He’s faced the tougher opponents between the two of them. He has also experienced being hit and getting right back . So because of his experience and durability, I’m still siding with Lineker,” Folayang said.
“I'm saying whoever gets to land first will probably win, but if I'm to predict, I'd still stick with the champion. His chin is tested and we've seen how durable he is,” Sangiao added.
There are others on the team, though, that believe it’s too close to call. This includes Jeremy Pacatiw, someone who’s faced Andrade in the past.
While he didn’t outright predict an Andrade victory, he noted that his former opponent has the tools to become a World Champion some day.
“ got impeccable timing, and he’s very patient in his approach. In our fight, he really waited for me to make a mistake before timing a counter knee perfectly,” he said.
“His win over me, that wasn’t luck. He really timed my strikes and countered perfectly. I made a mistake and he made me pay for it. He’s World Champion caliber. He’s really good.”
