Signal No. 1 still up in parts of Luzon; 'Obet' maintains strength – PAGASA
Tropical depression Obet is still moving westward while maintaining its strength, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 20.
Last spotted 650 kilometers (km) east of Basco, Batanes, Obet was packing winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 55 kph. It is moving westward at 15 kph.
Wind signal, hazards
PAGASA’s latest bulletin issued at 5 p.m. showed that Wind Signal No. 1 still hoisted in parts of Luzon. Areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 include Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan.

“Strong winds may be experienced within any of the areas where Wind Signal No. 1 is hoisted. The highest possible wind signal that may be hoisted during the passage of Obet is Signal No. 2,” said the state weather bureau.
The weather disturbance will continue to bring heavy rainfall in the following areas until Saturday morning, Oct. 22: Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Apayao, northern portions of Ilocos Norte and mainland Cagayan. Meanwhile, light rains may prevail over the northern portion of Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, and the rest of mainland Cagayan.
Apart from moderate to heavy rains, residents of the aforementioned areas were told to be vigilant against other hazards such as flash floods and rain-induced landslides.
“Obet may reach tropical storm category by or Saturday early morning ,” PAGASA added.
