Guadana, Valdez connive as Lyceum frustratres Letran

Mclaude Guadana posted a career-high performance while Enoch Valdez showed immense hustle on both ends of the floor for Lyceum as the two connived down the stretch to frustrate reigning champion Letran, 82-75, in the NCAA Season 98 men's basketball tournament Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

The Pirates recovered from 19 points down and came alive in the second half behind the efforts of Guadana, who finished with 20 points built on three triples, and the do-it-all Valdez, who had five points, 12 rebounds, and six steals.

John Barba, who joined in the fray with pivotal baskets in the last three minutes of the game, also posted 12 points and eight rebounds while Patrick Montano also had 12 points for Lyceum.

As much as Guadana took charge late for the Pirates, who tied the College of St. Benilde Blazers atop the standings with twin 5-1 records, Valdez and Shawn Umali also pulled off key defensive stops in the paint which forced the Knights to commit several turnovers in the end game.

The sophomore shooting guard sparked Lyceum's 9-0 spurt bridging the last minute mark, capped by back-to-back free throws to give enough breather for the Pirates.

In that unanswered run, Barba's three-pointer at top of the key off an assist from Renzo Navarro, who also posted 11 points, seven assists, and three rebounds, added fuel to the fire as Lyceum pulled away for good and never looked back at that point.

While expressions of glee and jubilation were seen on the faces of the Pirates, frustration loomed over the Knights side as they fell to a 3-3 slate even as Fran Yu and Kurt Reyson committed crucial turnovers down the stretch.

Valdez's pesky defense on Yu, tapping the ball out in transition, paved the way for Navarro to set up a fastbreak play for Barba which pretty much sealed the deal for the Pirates.

Yu paced the undermanned Letran, sans the likes of Brent Paraiso and Louie Sangalang due to game suspensions, with 18 points and three assists while Reyson posted 16 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

King Caralipio hammered down 12 points and 17 rebounds while Kevin Santos, who provided the spark for the Knights early in the game, had 10 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists.
