DPWH readies equipment, personnel for calamity response

Due to frequent weather disturbances entering the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has conducted a five-day training workshop to equip its personnel of knowledge and skills on preventive maintenance of equipment being used in disaster response.

The DPWH Regional Office No. IV-A Equipment Management Division (EMD) spearheaded a training/workshop on the Operation and Preventive Maintenance of Heavy Equipment at Canlubang Interchange in Calamba, Laguna from Oct. 10 to 14.

The first two days of the training course started with a lecture at the DPWH Region IV-A Conference Room. While in the third to the fifth day of the event were spent in practical training at the Laguna Area Equipment Section (LAES).

DPWH said heavy equipment operators perform an actual test of heavy equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, road rollers, and service vehicles used in augmentation and operational tasks.

The DPWH said the purpose of the activity is to impart the necessary information and instruction on how to use heavy equipment safely. The department also taught the participants about safety procedures to avoid incidents during operational work.

The DPWH Region IV-A is equipping more rigid exercises to ready its personnel during calamities and weather disturbances that may hamper the roads and public utilities.

As the rainy season is coming closer, the agency has assured the public that they are ramping up necessary precautions to make sure of the safety and accessibility of major roads across the region.

Also joining the exercises were representatives from the Human Resource and Development Section of the Administrative Division, the Bureau of Equipment, and the Equipment Operation and Management Division.
