Nursing student shot dead in Cebu apartment

CEBU CITY – An 18-year-old nursing student was shot dead by a man who broke into her apartment at dawn on Saturday, Oct. 15, in Barangay Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

Police identified the fatality as Johana Xyrra Cabrera.

Investigation showed that suspect Rodel Cuizon entered Cabrera’s apartment and entered the victim’s room.

Police said Cabrera was awakened by noise and found the suspect in her room. Cabrera shouted for help, prompting the intruder to flee.

The victim’s brother chased the suspect outside their apartment.

A few moments later, Cabrera followed her brother and ran into the suspect who hid in a dark area. The suspect shot the victim in the shoulder and fled.

The victim was taken to the hospital where she was declared dead.

Police arrested the suspect in a follow-up operation 10 hours after the incident in Barangay Budlaan here. Cuizon had relatives in Barangay Budlaan who were unaware that he was involved in a crime.

Charges for murder and illegal possession of firearms will be filed against the suspect, said Lt. Col. Muhammad Jamiri, chief of the Intelligence Unit of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office.
