
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 4.6-magnitude earthquake in Eastern Samar on Monday morning, Oct. 17.
Phivolcs said the quake struck 10 kilometers (km) southeast of Giporlos, Eastern Samar at 9:57 a.m.
It said the earthquake was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Giporlos, Lawaan, Quinapondan, Balangiga, and Gen. MacArthur in Eastern Samar.
It was also felt at Intensity III (weak) in Hernani, Llorente, and Maydolong in Eastern Samar; Marabut and Santa Rita in Samar; and in Tacloban City, Palo, and Babatngon in Leyte.
Meanwhile, it was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Borongan City, Sulat, and Taft in Eastern Samar; Catbalogan City; and in Alangalang, Dulag, Abuyog, and Tolosa in Leyte.
It was also felt at Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Julita, Leyte.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
However, it does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
