ILOILO CITY – The Iloilo Provincial Veterinary Office and the local government of Oton, Iloilo culled 69 more pigs over the weekend to prevent the spread African Swine Fever (ASF).
Three-hundred five hogs were earlier culled after a swine specimen from a semi-commercial hog farm in Barangay Bita Norte tested positive for ASF.
Oton is now classified as a red zone (infected zone) for ASF.
Six pigs died from the hog farm. They had symptoms such as high fever and bled from the orifices.
Dr. Darel Tabuada, chief provincial veterinarian, said that even hogs in the farm that did not exhibit symptoms had to be depopulated as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, several local governments in Western Visayas, in Aklan, Capiz, and Guimaras, have temporarily banned hogs and pork products from Iloilo.
