A total of 558 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) was released last September from the various detention facilities of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

The Department of Justice (DOJ), to which BuCor is an attached agency, had said more PDLs will be released this month of October.

BuCor said that those released last September were PDLs who had served their jail terms, had been acquitted of the charges, and had been granted probation.

Of those released, 371 of them were freed during the Sept. 13 birthday of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

The National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) has lauded the BuCor for releasing a large number of inmates that included the elderly.

“The Commission conveys its heartfelt and sincerest appreciation in your kind action of reviewing the commitment documents leading to the eventual release of more than 300 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) among which are senior citizens who, needless to state, are in the twilight of their lives,” said NCSC Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer Franklin M. Quijano in a letter dated Sept. 15 to BuCor Director General Gerald Q. Bantag.
