REFLECTIONS TODAY
Today’s Gospel continues Jesus’ encouragement of his disciples facing persecution. It highlights the role of the Holy Spirit as the one who teaches the disciples about what to say when they face rulers and authorities for the sake of Jesus. The disciples who acknowledge the Son of Man before the world will be guided and strengthened by the Holy Spirit.
In this present time, it is becoming more and more difficult to acknowledge Jesus and his teachings before the world. Many are duped into things that are ephemeral, and worries have become part of our everyday life. Christians, as guided by the Holy Spirit, should continue setting examples to others, bearing witness to Christ and his teachings. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we must continue to be, as in the words of St. Teresa of Jesus, “the hands” with which Christ is blessing the world today.
How do we face our everyday worries? Do we call upon the Holy Spirit to guide us in every situation we face? Are we truly bearing witness to Jesus and his teachings?
Gospel • Luke 12:8-12
Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God. “Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say.”
