Phivolcs: 79 quakes at Bulusan in past 24 hours; low-level unrest continues

Seventy nine volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Bulusan in the past 24 hours – an indication that the volcano is still showing signs of “low-level unrest.”

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), in its bulletin issued on Saturday, Oct. 15, said 79 earthquakes were recorded at Bulusan Volcano in the past 24-hour period. Of this number, only 11 were located and plotted by state seismologists.

A moderate plume emission at approximately 250 meters tall was also observed by Phivolcs. The volcano’s edifice, on the other hand, remained inflated.

State seismologists on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 12, raised Bulusan’s alert level status from 0 to 1 after the volcano showed signs of an “overall unrest.”

Under this alert level status, a slight increase in volcanic earthquakes and steam or gas activities may be observed.

“ sporadic explosions from existing and new vents. notable increase in the temperature of hot springs slight swelling of the edifice ,” said Phivolcs.

With these developments, Phivolcs strongly warned against the entry into 4km-radius permanent danger zone as well as entry “without vigilance” into the extended danger zone. Flying an aircraft close to the volcano is also not allowed.

Bulusan is an active volcano located in Sorsogon.
