'Neneng' maintains strength; Signal No. 1 still up in 5 Luzon areas
Five areas in Luzon are still placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 as tropical depression Neneng moves closer to the Philippine landmass.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hoisted Signal No. 1 over the following areas in Luzon: Batanes, Cagayan, the eastern portion of Apayao, the extreme northern portion of Isabela, and the extreme northern portion of Ilocos Norte.

Individuals residing in the said areas may experience winds of 39 up to 61 kilometers per hour (kph) or intermittent rains within 36 hours.
Neneng was last spotted 685 kilometers (km) east of Calayan, Cagayan. It was packing maximum winds of 55 kph and gustiness of up to 70 kph. It is moving west southwestward at 15 kph.
“ ay magpapatuloy ang pag ulan for most of northern Luzon hanggang matapos ang weekend (Due to tropical depression Neneng, rain showers will persist in most of northern Luzon until the week ends),” said PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja in a public weather forecast.
Rainy weekend
In the next 24 hours, Neneng will continue to traverse the Philippine sea. The state weather bureau, however, stressed that they are not ruling out the possibility of it developing into a tropical storm.
“Bukas ng hapon o gabi ay nakakaapekto na ‘yung malakas na hangin dito sa lugar na may wind signals (As early as Saturday afternoon or evening, Oct. 15, the strong winds will begin affecting the areas with wind signals),” said Estareja.
Neneng will then make landfall or pass very close in extreme northern Luzon either in the vicinity of Batanes or Babuyan Islands on Saturday evening or early Sunday morning, Oct. 16.
“Sa Linggo ay buong araw uulanin ang malaking bahagi ng northern Luzon lalo na ang extreme portion nito (On Sunday, Oct. 16, it will rain all day in most parts of northern Luzon, especially its extreme portion),” he added.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast track, Neneng is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Monday, Oct. 17.
