Light to at times heavy rains seen in parts of Luzon beginning Saturday due to ‘Neneng’


The effects of tropical depression Neneng, particularly light to moderate with at times heavy rains, will be experienced in most parts of Luzon beginning Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said light to moderate with at times heavy rains are possible over Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Apayao, Kalinga, Ilocos Norte, and Abra beginning Saturday.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains, on the other hand, will persist over Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur until Sunday evening, Oct. 16.

Neneng was last spotted 575 kilometers (km) east of Calayan, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Wind signals raised

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remained hoisted in Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, the northern and eastern portions of Apayao, the extreme northern portion of Isabela, and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte.

This indicates that winds of 39 up to 61 kph and intermittent rains may prevail in the aforementioned areas within 36 hours.

Further intensification

Meanwhile, the state weather bureau said Neneng is still expected to pass very close or make landfall in the vicinity of Babuyan Islands or Batanes on Sunday, Oct. 16.

“Neneng is forecast to further intensify while moving over the Philippine sea and may reach tropical storm category ,” said PAGASA in its 5 a.m. bulletin.

“It may reach severe tropical storm category while traversing the vicinity of the Batanes-Babuyan Islands area,” it added.
