MB Daily News Update: All eyes on DOJ chief Remulla

Another high-ranking official of the Marcos administration is mired in controversy, although it's by no fault of his own.

Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla has address the arrest of his eldest son, Juanito Jose Diaz Remulla III, by the elements of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) during a drug sting in Las Piñas City.

Secretary Remulla, who is as unshakeable as they come in public service, vowed that he would " intervene in nor influence my son’s predicament, and I have not done so in any way".

The former congressman reckoned that a person "should always face the consequences of their actions and I will let justice take its own course".

"This is a very difficult time for me and my family. But this is nothing compared to what so many Filipinos are going through...I will respect the justice system and I wish my son a path to redemption," Secretary Remulla added.

Two high-ranking government officials have recently resigned from their respective posts under controversial circumstances, at least according to pundits. These are former Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez and Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles.

Meanwhile, a Department of Finance (DOF) official has warned the House of Representatives that the measure seeking to protect overseas Filipino workers' (OFWs) remittances could cost the country as much as P3.5 billion if it gets enacted.

As a House panel moved to consolidate nine bills that seek to protect the remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), an official from the Department of Finance (DOF) warned that the country could lose as much as P3.5 billion if the proposed measure becomes law.

“In the previous position paper we estimated the government loss that we . . . in the amount of P2.8 to P3.5 billion. We will still update this figure as the number of OFWs increased at this time,” DOF Finance Division Chief Jeanne Guinto told the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs during a public hearing.

Tackled during the hearing were nine bills calling for the lowering of OFW remittance transfer fees, reduction of taxes, and imposition of a ceiling on fees, among others.

Guinto also cited “various existing policies being imposed by the government to reduce the transaction cost of OFW remittances,” among them are Republic Act (RA) 10022 or the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipino Act of 1995 and the Expanded Foreign Currency Deposit System that exempt an overseas contract worker from the 15 percent final reporting tax on interest income.
