Foton Thunder 2.0 AT
There’s more reason to get a pickup these days as, besides their versatility as work or small business vehicles, they can also take families to far flung places for a bit of respite from busy city life.
Foton’s new Thunder pickup is one such vehicle, boasting of the bold and rugged look one has come to expect of a modern pickup, paired with modern conveniences that rival family cars.

Foton showcased this new Thunder at the recent Philippine International Motor Show. At the event, was kitted out with racks and accessories to truly highlight its suitability not just as a work vehicle but as a leisure vehicle as well. An awning as well as overhead tent were installed to make it an ideal vehicle for a car camping weekend. It’s amazing to see how just a few accessories can dramatically change the look and possibilities for this pickup.
Easily the most evident change is in the Thunder’s new grille that now boldly integrates its brand name. It’s paired with projector combination headlamps stretching out from the sides. It’s crowned by a clamshell hood to complete that rugged look. Lower on the façade are integrated LED daytime running lamps resting just above the foglamps.
The sides feature bold fender flairs to house the massive new 18-inch wheels. It rolls 265/60 series tires perfectly suited for both the city and tough terrain.
The Thunder will favorably compare against other pickups in the market. It measures 5340 mm long, is 1940 mm wide, and 1870 mm tall. It also has a generous 3110mm wheelbase to provide both front and rear passengers luxurious legroom in the cabin. Best of all, it offers a high 220 mm of ground clearance.

Powering the Thunder is a new engine under the hood. This is a new Aucan 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine developed by Foton. It replaces its predecessor’s 2.8-liter Cummins, and makes an impressive 161-PS at 4000 rpm along with 390-Nm of torque at 1800 to 2600 rpm. This is offered with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

The new Thunder is also designed to pamper its passengers. It comes with black leather seats with red trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. Ahead of the driver is an instrument cluster with new gauges and a configurable multi-info display. For entertainment, there’s a 10.25-inch touchscreen system. Automatic climate controls are right below it.
It also makes the drive itself much easier with features like an engine start/stop button, keyless entry, and an electronic parking brake.

The Thunder also ticks all the boxes for safety with features like anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, a traction control system, electronic stability program, hill-hold control, hill-descent control, a reverse camera, and dual front airbags.
