'Double standard?': Makabayan solon sounds off on arrest of Remulla's son

ACT-Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro detects "double standard" in the handling of the Remulla drug arrest when compared to former Senator Leila De Lima's arrest as well as to the victims of the previous Duterte administration's drug war.

The son of Department of Justice (DOj) Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla, Juanito Jose Diaz Remulla III, was arrested on Oct. 11 during a Las Piñas City drug bust. The raid yielded P1.3 million in "kush" marijuana.

Castro, in her statement, pointed out that De Lima has been in police detention since 2017 without any conviction. She also highlighted that thousands lost their lives under Duterte's war on drugs.

"The double standard becomes more glaring if we compare it with the thousands killed in the bogus drug war of the past administration. The secretary's son was arrested on Oct. 11 but it was only made public in Oct. 13. What transpired during that time?" Castro asked on Friday, Oct. 14.

Meanwhile, Secretary Remulla issued a handwritten statement wherein he vowed that he would not interfere in his son's drug case.

"Kung di sya anak ni Sec. Boying malamang isinama na ang agad ang media sa drug operation na yun at lumabas agad ang balita pagkahuli pa lang o mas malala ay baka napatay na agad sya at sasabihing nanlaban lang (If he wasn't the son of Remulla, for sure the media would have been brought to the drug operation and it would have been reported on. Worse, he could have been killed right away and they would have said he fought back)," said the deputy minority leader.

"The Marcos Jr. administration must show that no special treatment will be given and the case will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law," she continued.

Many on social media have called on Remulla to resign from his post following his son's arrest.

However, even President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. came to his defense and said that Remulla need not resign.

"At any rate we are still studying the developments of this case and to see if we need to file a resolution to probe the matter," Castro concluded.
