Blackwater averts collapse as Terrafirma crashes to 21st straight loss

Cameron Krutwig put his team on his back in the final frame as Blackwater averted disaster and sent Terrafirma reeling to its 21st straight defeat with a 93-86 victory in the 2022 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday, Oct. 14.

The Bossing couldn’t keep a firm grip of a 14-point advantage in the third frame but recovered just in time behind Krutwig who completely outplayed Dyip reinforcement Lester Prosper and guided Blackwater to an even 3-3 record in the standings.

Krutwig put up another offensive display, dropping 29 points and 24 rebounds while shutting down Prosper who, after exploding for 35 points the last game, could only muster 18 points and 11 rebounds including a 0-of-6 clip from the three-point territory and a poor minus-23 efficiency ratio.

Baser Amer and Troy Rosario also had a hand in steadying the ship for Blackwater in the final frame, contributing 21 and 15 points, respectively, as the Bossing pulled away inside the last two minutes of the contest with a 9-0 finishing kick.

Knowing full well how hard it is to face a hungry team in the Dyip especially after the Bossing themselves were on the same shoes last season when they also suffered a record of futility of 29 straight losses, head coach Ariel Vanguardia lauded the poise of his charges in the second half after losing the big lead.

“Talagang lumamang na kami pero bumalik pa rin talaga sila, ang (maganda) lang, I think we pretty did a good job, yung poise and luckily, kung sa fourth quarter nangyari yung run, baka di kami nakabawi gaya nung last game,” said Vanguardia who also urged the Bossing to play a more consistent game heading into the second half of their elims schedule.

“We gotta figure it out kasi kumbaga 0-0 uli ngayon, we’re 3-3, the next game gonna be tough so alam namin yun so we gotta get over the hump and be consistent,” he added.

The Bossing looked poised to leave the Dyip in the dust during a searing third quarter start when they managed to build a 14 point lead at 58-44, after only taking a precarious one-point cushion at the half, 37-36.

It was when Terrafirma mentor Johndel Cardel decided to sit Prosper down and play an all-Filipino crew made the run as the Dyip unleashed a 19-2 blast behind sparkplugs JP Calvo, Aldrech Ramos and Allen Mina to even take a 63-60 lead.

It was a back-and-forth affair since then as both squads traded runs in the payoff period until the final two minutes when the game remained knotted at 83-apiece. A Krutwig and-1 play against Prosper’s defense, a Rashawn McCarthy trey and two Amer free throws then took the fight out of the gritty Dyip.
