'Maymay' leaves 2 dead in Cagayan

At least two people died in the province of Cagayan as tropical depression "Maymay" unleashed heavy rains and strong winds in some parts of the country early this week.

Ruellie Rapsing, head of the Cagayan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMO), said the two fatalities were fishermen from the towns of Sta. Ana and Buguey.

Rapsing said the two fishermen sailed early morning of Tuesday, Oct. 11, despite the gale warning issued due to the threat of "Maymay" on Monday, Oct. 10.

"The body of the fisherman from Buguey was found near his capsized boat. The other fisherman from Sta. Ana, his body was found in Gonzaga town," said Rapsing in an interview over dzMM Teleradyo.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), however, is yet to confirm if the death of the two fishermen in Cagayan are typhoon-related.

"We are still verifying the casualties. Although their deaths were already reported, we have a validation process that we have to follow," said NDRRMC spokesperson Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV in the same interview.

He said a total of 7,069 people from 1,857 families were affected by "Maymay" in 34 barangays mostly in Cagayan Valley Region and Central Luzon.

He said there were also reported 112 areas submerged in flood, mostly in Cagayan.

But overall, Alejandro said the damage wrought by the weather disturbance was minimal based on the initial report.
