Caloocan City begins rescue of street dwellers

The Caloocan City Social Welfare Development Department (CSWDD) on Wednesday, Oct. 12, deployed social workers to conduct reach-out operations to rescue and assist street dwellers in some areas along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) and Light Rail Transit Line 1(LRT-1) Monumento Station.

“Inatasan po natin ang ating mga kawani na i-rescue ang mga street dweller, lalo na ang mga menor de edad sa EDSA at Monumento area. Matapos po nito, binigyan natin sila ng hot meals at atensyong medikal bago ibalik sa kanilang magulang, siyudad na kinabibilangan o bago dalhin sa ating shelter sa Bagumbong (We have instructed our staff to rescue the street dwellers, especially the minors in EDSA and Monumento area. We provided them with hot meals and medical attention before returning them to their parents, the city they belong to, or before taking them to our shelter in Bagumbong),” CSWDD Officer-in-Charge Roberto Quizon said.

According to the CSWDD, there were 12 individuals who were accompanied to their homes in Tondo, Manila; four in Tandang Sora, Quezon City; and five in Malabon City during the operations.

Five minors were also returned to their respective families, one was bought to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), while three individuals are to be sheltered in Tahanang Mapagpala Center in Barangay 171.

Caloocan City Mayor Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan said they will continue to conduct operations in various areas in the city to assist street dwellers and troubled youths to return to their homes or be rehabilitated.

“Ang ating pangako, lahat kasama. Sa ating mga programa, kabahagi din dito ang ating mga kababayang walang tahanan, sila ang higit na nangangailangan. Ang direktiba natin, sa Caloocan, wala tayong iiwanan (I made a promise of inclusivity to all. Part of our programs are for the homeless, they are the ones who are in need the most. My directive here in Caloocan is that we will leave nobody behind),” Malapitan said.

“Kung ano ang kaya nating maitulong, sisikapin natin silang kalingain at ibabalik naman natin sa kanilang mga magulang ang mga menor de edad na palaboy-laboy sa daan upang maiwasan ang kanilang pagbibisyo o pagkakasangkot sa krimen (What we can do to help of them, we will. We will return the minors who are wandering on the roads to their parents to prevent them from having vices or getting involved in crimes),” he added.
