BOC creates new unit to monitor import, export of guns, firecrackers
The Bureau of Customs has created a new unit that will focus on monitoring the entry and exit of firearms and accessories and chemicals and other ingredients being used in the manufacture of firecrackers and explosive materials.
Called the Customs Firearms and Explosives Unit (CFEU), BOC acting commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz said it is an ad interim unit that will effectively monitor the importation and exportation of firearms and major/minor parts thereof, accessories, ammunition, and controlled chemicals used in manufacturing ammunition, firecrackers, and explosives.
Its creation was covered by the issuance of Customs Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 27-2022.
Ruiz said the unit also covers the implementation of policies and procedures relative to Republic Act No. 10591 or the "Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunitions and Providing Penalties for Violation Thereof."
"Selected personnel of the Enforcement and Security Service (ESS) assigned at the 17 ports of entry will be assigned as contact persons to coordinate and work closely with the CFEU in the accomplishment of the unit's objectives," said Ruiz.
"In addition, the CFEU will ensure an effective working relationship with other government law enforcement agencies for efficient and effective Firearms and Explosives control," he added.
Ruiz said the newly-created unit will be under the direct supervision of the ESS-Enforcement Group (EG).
The creation of the CFEU, according to Ruiz, is part of the seven priority programs of BOC in accordance with President Marcos' directive to stop smuggling in the country while ensuring the safety and welfare of the public.
