Barangay, SK polls deferment allows focus on key issues --- Salceda
A House leader believes the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) from December 2022 to October 2023 underscored the opportunity to fix “structural issues”.

Albay 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda said the suspension will also gave the government “space to focus on the essentials such as beating inflation and strengthening jobs recovery.”
“It also gives us the time to think about more long-term solutions to structural issues in the Barangay and SK. I would advice my colleagues in Congress to use this opportunity to hear out all concerns about the governance of Barangays, our most unique political institutions,” the veteran lawmaker added.
The economist-congressman noted this would also allow them to iron out more recent legislation such as the SK officials compensation and civil service eligibility (RA 11758), which he principally authored and sponsored.
His remarks came after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act (RA) 11935, which sets the polls “the last Monday of October 2023 and every three years thereafter.”

Originally, the BSKE was set on Dec. 5 this year.
This is the fourth time since 2016 that the barangay elections were postponed; the first three times were under the Duterte administration.
The subsequent elections were supposed to take place in May 2020, but the Duterte administration had it postponed to Dec. 5.
Lawmakers gave various reasons for postponing the elections, noting the need for more time to set up reforms and re-allocate the budget.
