S. Leyte town steps up tourism campaign

HINUNANGAN, Southern Leyte -- The town known for the islands of San Pablo and San Pedro Islands has stepped up its tourism campaign with the recent launching of its tourism development plan.

Tagged as Southern Leyte’s Maldives, the island also known as Pong Gamay boasts captivating white sand beaches, scenic sights, and unspoiled waters.

The island, which is only about a 3-hour drive from Tacloban City, is comparable to the famous Dead Sea, the landlocked salt lake between Israel and Jordan since its high salinity makes one float for a while.

Mayor Reynaldo Fernandez said the plan aims to establish a comprehensive program for the social, environmental, and economic development of at least 16 tourist sites in the municipality.

He added that their main goal is to conserve and protect said areas while promoting responsible tourism and development such as formulating their solid waste management plan and ensuring that the carrying capacity of the islands is strictly adhered to.

He also disclosed that the initiative started during his first term as the local chief executive, which is the first in Southern Leyte province.

It was formulated with the help of Southern Leyte State University and other stakeholders.

The plan also showcases food products, artworks, and locally made souvenir items by Hinunangan Women's Association, 4Ps and SLP members, and other private individuals.

Department of Tourism (DOT-8) regional director Karen Tiopes lauded the local government unit's initiative, citing that it is in line with DOT's 7-Point Agenda.

"Not all LGUs have plans. We salute you for being a trailblazer. Others have a small appreciation of what tourism is...Tourism is creating businesses, jobs, and livelihood," she said.
