After promising first round, Pirates coach Gilbert Malaban braces for more challenge

Lyceum head coach Gilbert Malabanan is expecting more challenges for his wards as the Pirates finished their first-round campaign on a high note following an 82-80 win against the Arellano Chiefs Tuesday, Oct. 11.

The victory propelled the Pirates to their solo second spot at 7-2 record as other teams are set to play their last games in the next few days for the first round.
Given the tight standings this season, Malabanan admitted that all squads posed threats to Lyceum but expressed satisfaction with how the Pirates responded in almost every pressure-packed and close games.
"Na-challenge ako sa lahat," said Malabanan after Lyceum's win at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. "Sasabihin ko na this second round, expect all of the teams, they're gonna do their best. And we're gonna do our best to win as many games as we can."
Obviously, the job isn't done yet for the Pirates but Malabanan is optimistic that his players will deliver in the second round after a couple of review sessions.
As for its assessment, Malabanan, who was once part of Lyceum's coaching staff before transitioning to head tactician duties, is quite happy with how the Pirates performed at least in the first round.
After all, Lyceum secured its solo lead and trailed league-leader College of St. Benilde, which holds a 7-1 slate, coached by no less than Charles Tiu.
"We're gonna watch our games. Lahat ng games namin titignan namin kung paano kami nanalo, kung bakit kami nanalo, kung paano kami natalo," added the Pirates mentor.
"Titignan namin lahat ng 'whys.' Even all of my coaches will do their part. And alam naman natin as coaches, 'di naman pwedeng mag-coach ka lang diyan, kailangang pag-aralan mo rin 'yong kalabanan mo, 'yong sistema. I'm happy to say that. After this, we're gonna work ."
