The Philippine National Police (PNP) will be implementing stricter measures inside the Custodial Center at Camp Crame following the bloody hostage-taking on Sunday morning that led to the death of three inmates and compromised the safety of former senator Leila de Lima.

One of the changes, according to PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr., is the implementation of the buddy system in the distribution of food ration to the inmates.

The three inmates took the opportunity to grab and stab a police officer who was distributing the food ration alone.

The wounded police officer is in critical condition after suffering multiple stabwounds.

Another one, according to Azurin, is stricter measures in ensuring that no object will be sneaked inside the detention facility that could be converted into a weapon.

In the case of the Sunday hostage-taking, the inmates used a fork which was turned into an improvised knife.

This was the weapon used in stabbing the police officer and in the hostage-taking involving De Lima.

"The distribution of the food will be done through a buddy-buddy system and we will make sure that nothing will be sneaked inside that would be used to hurt anybody," said Azurin.

He, however, said that the visiting hours must resume as soon as possible in order to give the relatives of the inmates inside to check on the condition of their kin detained inside the Custodial Center.

"As much as possible, the visiting hours should resume and at the same time, we will make sure that the incident that occurred on Sunday will not happen again," said Azurin.
