Private citizens pledge donations to finish abandoned school buildings in Silang

SILANG, Cavite – Private individuals have pledged to donate resources to finish the construction of school buildings allegedly abandoned by contractors.

During his first 100 days report on Friday, Oct. 7, Mayor Kevin Amutan Anarna said the local government unit could not allocate funds for the construction while waiting for the Special Technical Audit Team of the Commission on Audit.

Despite this, however, a few individuals have come to students' aid.

"Kahit po bawal pang pondohan ng ating munisipyo, marami na po tayong mga kababayan at mga pribadong indibidwal na tutulong mula po sa sariling bulsa nila para maipagawa po itong ating mga school (As our municipal government cannot fund it yet, many of our fellowmen and private individuals are helping from their own pockets to finish the construction of our schools)," Anarna said during his speech streamed live through Facebook.

In a Facebook post last week, the newly elected mayor expressed his disappointment after seeing Lucsuhin Elementary School students attend classes under umbrellas as their school building is yet to be finished.

The mayor's post also showed Silang Central School Special Education students being taught in the school canteen due to another uncompleted building.

During his speech, Anarna mentioned other construction projects that were also purportedly left hanging by the contractor despite having been paid in full, including a new building for the local police, a multi-use building, and a retaining wall.

"Hindi ko po alam kung invisible po ang ginagawa ng mga contractor dati (I do not know if the former contractors made invisible projects)," Anarna commented.

The mayor, meanwhile, was happy to inform his constituents of the local government unit's accomplishments over the past three months and their plan to launch Silang as the Botanical Garden Capital of the Philippines, starting with a horticulture festival next year.
