BOC vows to step up drive vs illegal drugs after seizure of P6.7B worth of shabu in Manila

Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) acting Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz has vowed to further step up the campaign against illegal following the seizure of more than P6.7 billion worth of shabu in two separate illegal drugs operations in Manila.

The BOC, through its Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service-Manila International Container Port (CIIS-MICP), was among the operating units that assisted the Drug Enforcement Group of the Philippine National Police, in the operation that led to the confiscation of 990 kilos of shabu inside a lending company owned by a police sergeant in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Ruiz said it is a great jumpstart to the last quarter of the year as government agencies work together intensifying their operations against the illegal drug trade.

“We want to thank PDEG for leading the operation. It would not be possible without the help of many other agencies, including the BOC and PDEA, but PDEG deserves the credit for acting upon the information they got, investigating the area and the suspect, and coordinating with all of us for the success of this operation,” he added.

“Sometimes, in as big as an operation as this, it takes a lot to keep it under wraps and ensure no one would get wind of the plan. This is why coordination among different government agencies must be topnotch. We need to ensure we can trust and work with one another,” he stressed.

The operation started as a buy-bust that led to the arrest of Ney Saligumba Atadero in Tondo, Manila on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 8. Atadero reportedly squealed the location of the drug source which led to the operation in Sta. Cruz Manila.

A follow-up operation also resulted in the arrest of Police Master Sgt. Rodolfo Mayo, Jr. who yielded two kilos of shabu in Quiapo, Manila early morning of Sunday, Oct. 9.

Mayo is an intelligence officer of the Special Operations Unit of the PDEG in Metro Manila.

BOC-CIIS Director Jeoffrey Tacio vowed they to continue the strengthened coordination and cooperation with BOC’s partner law enforcement agencies especially PDEG and the PDEA (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency) to ensure that the fight against illegal drugs will remain strong.

“Drugs have long been our society’s biggest problem. The BOC is one with the current administration and our partner agencies in taking the necessary steps to stop this menace,” said Tacio.

PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr., for his part, said investigation is mow being conducted to determine if there are other policemen who were working with Mayo.
